How much weight will a cane support?

The one-piece crook handle cane will always be the strongest, and it will support up to 250 pounds. They are designed for people who have to put all their weight on the cane. Two-piece canes with metal band connectors are designed for style and not meant to be used as weight- bearing canes. They should be should be used as walking aids and as such will support up to 250 lbs. The Hercules series is thicker and supports up to 500lbs.

What length should my canes be for proper use?

The proper way to measure a cane is as follows:

  • Remove the rubber tip
  • Turn the cane upside down
  • On the side opposite the injury, place the cane against your hip
  • With a slight bend in the your elbow, mark your cane where it meets your wristbone
  • Cut cane at that height and replace the tip
  • Patient should consult doctor or physical therapist for walking gait

What hand should I use my cane in?

Canes are used in the hand that is on the opposite side of the injury. For example: If the left hip is causing a problem, the cane should be used in the right hand.
